American Problems: Challenging Issues

(ACCN# CA20, CA30)

CA 20
This course is a two semester course which can be taken as one full unit, or in two separate half-credit units. The first semester will focus on current issues and the controversies inherent in a democracy. Students will focus on our local elections and through these become familiar with the place these issues occupy in our American history.

CA 30

The second semester will focus more narrowly on issues that are environmental in nature; however, though specific to trees, water, birds and such, each issue is really a part of a greater American cultural attitude, beginning with manifest destiny and our trust that science will solve our problems.

Both semesters will utilize a variety of technologies: electronic mail, listservs, web sites and Walden3 - a MOO for synchronous communication.
